OUR MISSION

In 2005, the Borough of Flemington purchased Flemington’s first house and established Samuel Fleming House as a local Hunterdon County history museum. The Friends of Fleming Castle was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in order to maintain and preserve the structure and contents of the Samuel Fleming House and grounds and to provide it as a colonial museum in historic Flemington open to the public.

Our goal is to provide a historic interpretation of life in early Flemington through guided tours, historically accurate displays, educational programs, museum events, and participation in community events.

Modern photo of the exterior of the Samuel Fleming House Museum. It is a white building with dark green shutters. In front of the house a straw bale, pumpkins, flowers, and corn stalks surround a black signpost.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY

Guided by History
Inspired by the Future

Samuel Fleming emigrated from Ireland in the early 18th century, building one of the first permanent dwellings in the Amwell Valley—the home where he and his wife Esther, the daughter of French Huguenots, raised their ten children. Their family's influence extended beyond the Revolutionary War in New Jersey, and the house they built played host to a number of prominent Hunterdon County and New Jersey families.

Part of our mission is to reflect on the ambition and strength of a family that took a chance in the colonies and find lessons there to celebrate the community that sprang up around them.

A garden with pink roses is in the center of the image. A brick path curves from the foreground around to the right. A weathered wooden picket fence is in the background.

GARDENS FOR COMMUNITY

Originally designed in 2007, this beautifully maintained garden boasts a gazebo, the Carmen Grimes Memorial Garden, which is a carefully researched colonial healing garden, The Children's Corner, and a hidden arbor seat and seasonal rose displays.
